Not illustrated. 1886 Excerpt: ...troubled with his liver.for several years, and for a year has had jaundice off and on. He sometimes gets entirely white. The attacks he thinks result from indigestion and taking cold. They are preceded by a slight pain in the region of the liver. He has lost considerable flesh. He has never had chills and fever. Does not drink much. Perhaps the most common cause of jaundice from retention is catarrh of the bile ducts, resulting from attacks of indigestion, or more commonly from cold. The common bile-duct as it enters the intestine passes obliquely through the walls of the duodenum. When a person gets a slight attack of gastroduodenitis, an acute catarrhal condition, which might follow a little indigestible food or taking cold, the mucous membrane of the duodenum becomes swollen and closes the mouth of the duct, or the inflammation may extend to the bile ducts, producing gastro-duodenal hepatic catarrh, and causing obstruction to the flow of bile by the swelling of the mucous membrane. This is, of all the conditions causing jaundice, by'far the most common. When a man has had it once, he is very liable to get it again, unless the first attack has been perfectly cured. This man appears to have had such a condition of affairs. Catarrhal icterus is accompanied generally by nausea, vomiting, some little diarrhoea and pain in the epigastrium. After this has lasted for a few days, the stools become pale (devoid of bile), and the conjunctiva a little yellow. The diarrhoea may or may not continue. As the case advances, the jaundice deepens, the stools become less in number and jaundice may occur. We then have a fully developed case of icterus. This may be a single acute attack, which will in a short time end in recovery under judicious medical and hygienic treatment...
